Genetic Aspects in the Colorectal Polyps Carcinogenesis

چکیده
Colorectal cancer, one of the most frequent cancers worldwide, is more prevalent in North America, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, Western Europe, Japan and Israel and, for this reason, is commonly regarded as a Western lifestyle disease. The progressive introduction of Western dietary habits, especially increased fat intake and reduced carbohydrate and dietary fiber intake is associated with an increased incidence of colorectal cancer and related deaths. This is the reason of a marked interest in the understanding of cell and molecular mechanisms underlying the carcinogenetic processes. The advanced neoplasm, including colorectal cancer, contain a large number of genetic and molecular alterations that contribute to their neoplastic progression. It is well known that early detection of malignancies in different tissues is quite important for reducing the disease. Cancer that is of epithelial origin is caused by both external and internal factors. These causal factors may act together or in sequence to initiate and /or promote cancer. In spite of knowing more than ever about the genetic and cellular events that can accelerate or inhibit cancer induction, cancer is still the number one health concern in the world, especially in Western and Westernized countries.

Correlation of gut microbiota composition with colon adenomatous polyps
Microbiota is a collection of microorganisms that live in the oral cavity, respiratory tract and intestine of multicellular organisms. Microbiota exerts numerous physiological and pathological effects on the organism in which it resides. Increasing attention has been directed to the host-microbiota interaction, which is highly relevant to the development of carcinogenesis. Changes in the compos...

Background & Aim: Colorectal polyps are among the commonest lesions encountered by surgical pathologist. In the United States, colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy are recommended for almost all people over the age of 40 years. The development of carcinoma from adenomatous lesions is referred to as the adenoma-carcinoma sequence. Virtually, all colorectal carcinomas exhibit genetic altera...
متن کاملPolyps as biomarkers for colorectal neoplasia.
Current understanding of colorectal carcinogenesis suggests a series of genetic changes occurring pari passu with morphological changes ultimately resulting in a cancerous lesion. The adenomatous polyp was originally the prototype of the preneoplastic lesion but recently, other colonic polyps, primarily the hamartomas, have been clinically characterized as colorectal cancer biomarkers with gene...
متن کاملClose Correlation between Telomerase Expression and Adenomatous Polyp Progression in Multistep Colorectal Carcinogenesis1
To investigate the role of telomerase in the multistep Colorectal carcinogenesis, we examined telomerase activity in 31 adenomatous polyps and 22 paired cancer-normal mucosa specimens from non-hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer patients. Telomerase activity was detected in 18% of normal mucosa, 16% of small «1.0 cm) polyps, 20% of intermediate polyps, 71% of large (>2.0 cm) polyps, and ...
متن کاملEVALUATION OF HISTOPATHOLOGIC CHARACTERISTICS OF COLORECTAL POLYPS IN URMIA IMAM KHOMEINI TEACHING HOSPITAL
Background & Aims: Polyp is a protruding mass into the intestinal tract, which can be pedunculated or not. It is believed that most of colorectal cancers arise from adenomatous polyps. Materials & Methods: In this cross-sectional study pathology reports of 246 patients were evaluated. Results: In our study 64.2% of patients were male and 35.8% were female. The mean age of patients was 52.54±1...
متن کاملInherited variation in carcinogen-metabolizing enzymes and risk of colorectal polyps.
Exposures such as cigarette smoke and meat contain a variety of procarcinogens, which are thought to play a role in elevation of risk for colorectal polyps and/or cancer. These procarcinogens (including heterocyclic amines and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) are metabolized by a variety of polymorphic enzymes including N-acetyltransferases, sulfotransferases, cytochrome P450 enzymes and epoxi...
